More Information:

Cambodian Community Development is dedicated to serving the needs of the Cambodian community in the Bay Area.  Since its founding in 1997, CCDI has provided support to Cambodian Americans with language interpretation, cultural and linguistic education, legal and medical assistance, and much more.

Cambodian American youth in Oakland face many obstacles to building healthy and fulfilling lives. Their families fled a genocidal regime and settled in one of the most violent cities in the United States. Those who did not directly suffer the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge experience them vicariously through parents and elders.

With our passionate and committed staff and community members, CCDI is looking forward, in a direction that will focus on youth healthy development and ways to heal the trauma of the dismemberment of our community and culture. It is a slow process, but CCDI is making an effort to respond to the needs of this very special and traumatized Asian population whose impact continues to effect the next generation.

Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for Cambodian Americans in the Bay Area and promote community development.

Cambodian refugees suffered tremendously after the escaping the Khmer Rouge genocide. They arrived in the United States, emotionally scarred and without tools to navigate their new culture and access resources to meet their basic needs, such as housing and healthcare. In 1997, CCDI Board President Sambo Ly and a group of Cambodian community activists met to hold a fundraiser to create an organization to assist Cambodian refugees living in the Bay Area. In one night, the group rolled five thousand eggrolls and sold them on the street, in schools, and in their workplaces. They used the proceeds to create Cambodian Community Development Inc, (CCDI) a grassroots volunteer-based organization. Over the years, we have developed many programs and services to address the needs of the community. Though CCDI has evolved, we retain the same grass roots, community spirit that brought us together in the first place.
